The Magdalena and the Manduriacu drop out of the cloud forest of Los Cedros through steep boulder gardens, clean drops and long continuous rapids. They are pristine, warm-water Class V rivers with world-class whitewater.
In the few years since their first descents, the sister rivers have become instant classics of Ecuadorian whitewater for national and international paddlers alike.

But the Magdalena is much more than a great river for kayaking.

23 years later, two mining concessions named "Río Magdalena 01 and 02" were approved, granting over 68% of the forest to Ecuador's state mining company and its partners.
A legal action to stop the mining reaches Ecuador's Constitutional Court, which takes the case.
The Court issues a historic ruling that recognizes the forest as a subject of rights and cancels the environmental permits. Mining and all extractive activity are banned in Los Cedros. The forest and its rivers are saved, and the ruling becomes a landmark worldwide. Despite the win, pressure persists.
The communities and Los Cedros hold the first Festival del Río Magdalena, a gathering of music, food, culture and recreation to celebrate the territory and strengthen community ties.
Kayakers join the festival for the first time: 20 Ecuadorian paddlers run the river together.
The forest is protected, but the ruling is hard to enforce, and the rivers around it are still under pressure from mining as development plans persist for a hydroelectric dam.

The ruling stopped the mining, but the pressure never left. The Manduriacu still sits inside a mining concession and a hydroelectric dam is planned on it. Pressure rises on the community as they have to choose between monetary gains and preserving nature.

But a court ruling only protects a forest if someone enforces it. The government has yet to put a management plan in place, so Los Cedros carries most of the monitoring and protection itself, training people from the community, with far fewer resources than the job needs.
These rivers carry the life of the cloud forest: about 400 bird species, jaguars, spectacled bears, the endangered brown-headed spider monkey, orchids and fungi, described in more than 130 scientific papers. They also sustain the families who live beside the water.
This is where we come in: a court ruling doesn't pay local families. A festival can. At Magdalena Fest, paddlers have the option to not only participate but also stay and eat with the local community. Because to us, a free-flowing river is worth more to the people who live by it.
Next year Los Cedros starts a kayak school for local kids with Red de Bosques Escuela, so the next generation grows up on these rivers.

Los Cedros
The forest that won its own court caseEl bosque que ganó su propio juicio
Los Cedros is a cloud forest in the Chocó-Andean region of northwest Ecuador, in the Intag–Manduriacos valley. José DeCoux founded it in 1988 with a group of Ecuadorian and international scientists, buying farms to protect the forest and the water sources that families in 10 downstream communities rely on. The Magdalena is born here, along with other rivers that sustain ecosystems, communities and productive activities, and 40% of the Manduriacu's watershed lies inside the protected forest.
CIPBAT (Corporación para la Investigación y Protección de los Bosques de los Andes Tropicales) and the Los Cedros Scientific Station work with communities and allies on research, biodiversity monitoring, environmental education, forest protection and strengthening territorial governance. The festival is part of these efforts and brings their message to new audiences.

The communities of Magdalena, Brillasol, Chontal and San José de Magdalena, together with Cielo Verde and Villaflora de Manduriacu Grande, are a fundamental part of this story. Their people have built ways of life tied to the forest, the rivers and local production. The festival seeks to strengthen their economic opportunities without compromising the ecosystems that sustain them.

Its Río Manduriacu Reserve began as a refuge for the last known population of the critically endangered Tandayapa Andes toad. Since then it has turned up species found nowhere else on Earth.

Even so, the river outside its borders is still unprotected. In 2019, scientists reported that the Manduriacu glass frog's habitat lay inside a mining concession sold without consulting EcoMinga or the local community.

For three decades, these communities have pushed out one mining project after another. In 2023 they won again: a provincial court revoked the license for the Llurimagua copper project, held by ENAMI and Chile's Codelco, finding that the communities were never properly consulted. The concession held the sources of 43 streams and rivers.

Local groups have also created 38 community-owned watershed reserves that protect about 12,000 hectares of cloud forest.
